ELLE X MIMCO: SPRING RACING EDITION
10 Oct 2017
As an authority on all things style, beauty, pop culture (and more), ELLE Australia has cemented itself as one of the most influential – and refreshing – magazines out there. As for their ever-stylish Editor-in- Chief Justine Cullen, we couldn't not ask her for some advice on dressing for the racing carnival.
So here it is: Justine shares her racewear tips, with some added inspo courtesy of the exclusive
ELLE Australia shoot featuring Montana Cox and MIMCO.
1. Rise and shine
Derby Day is traditionally all about black and white, but there’s no reason you can’t mix things up a little by opting for a stand-out block heel in silver glitter.
2. Make size matter
While my fallback is typically an ornate headband for the Melbourne Cup Carnival, I’m expecting to see a variety of mini straw hats this year – the perfect thing to pair with sculptural statement earrings.
3. Go the clash
For a playful spin on traditional trackside style, opt for a floral suit and drop crystal earrings. It’s a 2017 take on ladylike.
4. Embrace double trouble
The coolest, head-turning trend we’ve spotted on recent runways is the double bag. Carry your mini purse and basket bag for twice the impact (and carrying power).
5. Be a frill seeker
Even if you’re a jeans-and-tee devotee, this is your one-time excuse to dress up so make it count. Ruffles – adorning a hemline or a heel – are your fast-track to femininity.
6. Get a head start
Yes, the scrunchie is making a comeback! But the best iteration of the ’90s trend we’ve seen is in the form of a silk turban-style headband that works best with a low plait or ponytail.
7. Show your pearly white
Cool clusters of pearls make for a fresh update on a timeless classic. For head-to-toe colour commitment, add pearl-sprinkled jewels to an all-cream ensemble.
8. Draw the line
Your key word this racing season: balance. If you’re going for fabulous feathers and a fluffy pink coat, opt for a sleek headpiece and minimal jewels to give the look a modern edge.
