Arguably Brisbane’s premier cultural destination, The Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) has been host to several major exhibitions over the past decade, including a major display of Valentino’s haute couture collection (2010), and Australia’s first major Warhol retrospective (2007). Their latest project, GOMAQ, will profile more than
30 emerging and senior artists working across a broad spectrum of themes and media. The first in a series that will profile the innovations and achievements of leading Queensland visual artists, the exhibition features the work of more than 30 artists, including Monica Rohan (pictured). Inspired by a rural-idyll of a childhood in South East Queensland and the internal longing of the 19th century novel, floating transcendence and anchored realism share equal magnitude in Rohan’s paintings.

Until October 11 at QAGOMA.

Food trucks are still a thing, k? If there’s one thing we love, it’s a rotating schedule of deliciousness all in the one place. Enter Welcome to Thornbury. Located on the former site of a car manufacturing factory, the venue has been transformed into a mixed indoor and outdoor space housing multiple bars, food trucks and a beer hall. With plenty of seating and lush foliage, there’s no doubt it will be a popular spot on balmy summer nights.

Welcome to Thornbury, open late every day. 520 High Street, Northcote.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Electra House Image via Facebook.

After 20 years sitting dormant, historic Electra House has been transformed into a stately stone edifice to provide a home to Adelaide’s most diverse food destination. Built in 1901 to accommodate the employees of the Citizens Life Assurance Co, the three-storey heritage-listed building exudes dignity, with Corinthian columns, shapely balusters and muscle-clad gargoyles. Even if you’re not up for a drink or a snack, the building is well worth a squiz.

Electra House, open every day except Sunday. 131 King William Street, Adelaide.
