Meet the founders of Memobottle

Memobottle’s co-founders Jesse Leeworthy and Jonathan Byrt grew up in a coastal town in Victoria, which meant they got to experience first hand the devastating effects that single use plastic water bottles have on our oceans and environment. Jesse and Jonathan launched the memobottle through a kickstarter campaign in 2014, with the intention of breaking the population’s dependence on single-use drink bottles.

How did memobottle come to life?

The memobottle was designed to overcome two frustrations that we had: Single-use water bottles and their disastrous environmental impact, and the inability to fit cylindrical bottles in our bags. We had a think about the items that we put in our bags and realised that the majority of them are flat: computers, ipads, books, phones etc. It wasn’t necessary for reusable water bottles to be cylindrical, so we decided to redesign the water bottle around the international paper sizes—a concept that is optimised for carry and transport.

What’s special about memobottle?

Over 525 billion single-use water bottles were consumed last year, despite 91% of the world's population having access to clean drinking water. Our aim is to significantly reduce single-use waste. Besides the unique look and practical benefits of our products, our social and environmental impact is hugely important to us. The memobottle has become an environmental icon, it is helping change the way people think about single-use products, and move them toward reusable habits.

We have a partnership with US Not-for-Profit water.org that allows us to provide two months of clean water to those in need for every memobottle sold. To date, we’ve been able to provide over 3 million days of clean water, and we estimate that we’ve prevented the purchase of over 50 million single-use water bottles through the sale of memobottle products. It’s a nice start, but it’s only a fraction of what we plan to achieve.

Memobottle is an initiative that works passionately to promote social and environmental sustainability, while improving life convenience.

Top three tips for being more sustainable:

It’s a bit of a cliché statement nowadays, but the importance behind it is more relevant than ever. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:

  • Reduce: Purchase only what you need. Food and clothing are the main ones that come to mind here.
  • Reuse: Try whenever possible to purchase reusable products and avoid purchasing single-use products. For example: reusable water bottles, coffee cups, shopping bags and straws.
  • Recycle: Understand what can and what can’t be recycled and make sure that you have a system in place at your home.
