Marc Jacobs’ muse, editorial it-girl (she’s graced the pages of I-D, Dazed and Confused, Teen Vogue and Oyster magazines, to name a few); meet the face behind our 2015 Spring Racing campaign, Ruby Jean Wilson.
MIMCO: You were recently in Melbourne, shooting our spring racing campaign. What was it like working with the MIMCO team?
Ruby Jean Wilson: I loved working with the MIMCO team, it was such a fun day! We all had a laugh and had fun trying on all the accessories.
MIMCO: You were born in the UK, but have lived, and started your career in Australia. How do you think the Australian fashion industry differs from the UK?
RJW: I think the fashion in each country tends to reflect the lifestyles of its youth in particular. Australians want to wear clothes that are chic but comfortable which I think reflects their more laid back lifestyle. I do love the fast pace of British fashion and its quirky subcultures – but who wants to wear a sundress in the freezing rain?
MIMCO: Who are the three women who have had the biggest impact on your life/career so far?
RJW: My mother, my sister and my agent.
MIMCO: How important do you think it is to take risks?
RJW: I think it is important to take risks in moderation. I like the quote 'success is waiting on the other side of your comfort zone.'
MIMCO: For someone so young, you’ve already experienced so much success. What do you consider to be the biggest achievement in your career so far?
RJW: There have been a lot of career highs but I prefer to look at how having this job and this lifestyle has changed me on the whole. It has taught me to trust in myself and to be adaptable.
MIMCO: What are your words to live by?
RJW: My mum always used to tell me 'What is meant for you won't go past you.'
MIMCO: What does style mean to you?
RJW: Style is a way to define yourself without speaking and a way to express yourself. Clothes to me have always represented what I'm interested in or how I'm feeling at that time.
MIMCO: What are your top tips for dressing up?
RJW: Invest in adaptable pieces. Find a couple of dresses and amazing pairs of shoes that you can change the look of with accessories or the way you do your hair and makeup.
MIMCO: What’s the best piece of advice you ever received
RJW: Never sell yourself short.
